METABOLIC DISORDERS

Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) is a condition characterized by insulin resistance and an increased risk of pasture-associated laminitis (easy keepers). Cushings is known as PPID. Polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM) is characterized by abnormal glycogen accumulation in muscle tissue caused by a hypersensitivity to insulin. Recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER) is an inherited condition that involves abnormal intracellular calcium regulation during muscle contraction. Horses with RER (Tie-up) suffer from painful muscle cramping when they exercise.

Dr. Ray Geor from Michigan State University suggests* that weight management and control of insulin levels are two important ways to help maximize quality of life and longevity in horses with laminitis associated with PPID and EMS. *Geor, R.A. 2013. Dietary management of endocrine disorders in the older horse. Proceedings of the American Association of Equine Practitioners Annual Convention, Nashville, Tennessee.

Feed management and nutritional support help to control insulin levels; thereby reducing the associated symptoms (laminitis, etc.) of metabolic disorders.
